Why do the greatest leaders often have the least to say about their heroic acts?

Standing in the American Cemetery at Normandy with my father, we found ourselves between the graves of Theodore Roosevelt III and his brother Quentin. Their story hit differently when you’re walking the same ground where history was made.

Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was 57 years old on D-Day - the oldest officer to land on the beaches. When his unit landed a mile off target at Utah Beach, he didn’t wait for orders. Instead, he made the famous call: “We’ll start the war from right here.” Then he walked the beach under fire, moving to points of friction and leading from the front. He survived D-Day but died from a heart attack a month later.

At Pointe du Hoc, my father and I reflected on Sergeant Jack Kuhn from our hometown - a Ranger who scaled steep cliffs under German fire. After the war, he returned home and quietly served as the local Chief of Police when my father was in high school. Many of his neighbors had no idea about his D-Day heroics.

BG Roosevelt led with visibility. SGT Kuhn served with humility. Both changed the world and demonstrated profound lessons in leadership.

We went out too hot. By the sled pull, Kyle was completely gassed and I had to jump in for his final 5 meters.

Strategic lessons from French Alps:

This weekend’s Mont Blanc attempt didn’t go as planned. We made the tactical decision to abort our summit attempt Friday evening due to early season conditions, avalanche risk, and an honest assessment of our experience level.

But Saturday delivered. We took the Aiguille du Midi cable car to 12,605ft (3842m) to gain some valuable high altitude experience and take in some stunning views.
